Polyp Resection including EMR

Comprehensive care for digestive disorders by Dr. Akeel Alisa

What is Polyp Resection?

Polyps are small growths that form in the lining of the bowel. While most are harmless, some can become cancerous if left untreated.

Polyp resection is the process of removing these growths during colonoscopy. For larger or more complex polyps, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is performed. EMR allows safe removal of flat or broad-based lesions without the need for major surgery.

Why is This Important?

  • Prevents bowel cancer by removing precancerous growths.
  • Provides tissue for analysis to rule out malignancy.
  • Reduces the need for invasive surgery.

What Happens During EMR?

  • The polyp is lifted using a special fluid injection.
  • A wire loop (snare) is used to cut and remove the lesion.
  • The tissue is retrieved for examination.

Benefits

  • Minimally invasive cancer prevention
  • Safe and effective removal of high-risk polyps
  • Performed during a routine colonoscopy
  • Avoids unnecessary surgery
